All of us at WebsiteAlive think it’s important to give back to the community, and we especially like to lend a hand in our hometown of Houston, TX. So when Director of Client Happiness Jarrell Liner found out that A.B. Anderson Academy, an arts magnet school in Houston, was looking for volunteers to help build a new playground, he stepped up. He also brought with him $100 worth of tools, donated by WebsiteAlive.
The playground construction took place on April 5, 2014, on the school grounds. More than 100 volunteers showed up at 7:45 a.m. and worked until mid-afternoon to get the job done. Workers applied paint, assembled playground equipment, moved vast amounts of mulch, and poured cement to set the equipment in place.
“The most challenging part was working with the cement crew,” Liner says. “We would carry 80-pound bags of cement to a line of wheelbarrows, dump the cement into the wheelbarrow and spray water in it, then manually stir it with a gardening hoe. It was definitely a workout!”
The school will held an opening ceremony for the new playground on Friday, April 11, at 2:30 p.m. “My favorite part was seeing the finished playground and knowing that I was a part of something that will bring joy to kids for years to come,” Liner says.
The new school playground was sponsored by the law firm Latham & Watkins LLP and an organization called KaBOOM!. KaBOOM! is a national nonprofit that envisions putting a playground within walking distance of every child in America. According to the organization’s website, children are playing less than they have in any previous generation, and that “play deficit” is causing a great number of problems, including childhood obesity, behavioral issues, and stunted social, cognitive, and creative development. Part of the reason, they say, is that recess is being cut back at many schools. Another reason is that not enough play spaces are being built and those that do exist are often in disrepair. To date, KaBOOM! has built more than 2,000 playgrounds, serving more than 5.5 million children. Watch the video!
